Google Cloud has announced a groundbreaking partnership with the government of El Salvador, with the aim of digitizing the country's governance, healthcare, and education systems. As part of the collaboration, Google will establish an office in the country and provide its advanced Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) services.
A Transformation for El Salvador
This partnership is a significant step towards modernizing government services in El Salvador and bringing technological advancements to the country. By utilizing the GDC, El Salvador will have access to cutting-edge cloud-based infrastructure, allowing data to be stored and processed closer to its source.
Theodore Kurian, the CEO of Google Cloud, expressed his belief in the power of cloud computing to truly transform Latin America. "Cloud computing has expanded access to valuable applications and services across industries and regions worldwide," said Kurian. This partnership will enable small companies and the public sector in El Salvador to leverage the same capabilities as more developed markets.
Seven-Year Partnership
The partnership between Google Cloud and El Salvador is set to last for seven years, pending full legislative approval. During this time, the government plans to digitize various projects and processes, such as invoicing and permitting.
This collaboration also marks a significant milestone, as El Salvador becomes the first Latin American government to embrace cloud technology on such a scale.
El Salvador's Bitcoin Integration
The partnership with Google Cloud will also support El Salvador's proactive approach to Bitcoin adoption. The additional GDC infrastructure will facilitate the country's Bitcoin full nodes, with support from the Ordinal Protocol.
El Salvador has been at the forefront of cryptocurrency integration, with Bitcoin being recognized as legal tender since 2021. Recently, the Bitcoin Beach initiative successfully educated over 25,000 students about Bitcoin, granting them a "Bitcoin diploma" through the country's education system.
The program has already showcased promising results, with one student even returning to his former school to educate teachers about digital assets.
Cointelegraph has reached out to Google Cloud for further comment on this latest expansion.
