El Salvador President Nayib Bukele has officially filed paperwork to run for re-election in the country's upcoming presidential election in February 2024. Bukele, a strong advocate for Bitcoin, received overwhelming support from the public after being nominated by his party.
A Popular Leader with Bold Plans
Bukele, known for his bold and tech-friendly policies, expressed his determination to continue improving the country during a speech in front of thousands of El Salvadorans. "We need five years to continue improving our country," he said.
Bukele rose to power in 2019, breaking the dominance of the two-party system that had ruled for three decades. His party, New Ideas, has the support of 70% of the country's voting population, according to a study by an El Salvadoran university.
Controversy Surrounding Bukele's Eligibility
Despite his popularity, critics argue that Bukele is not eligible to seek a second consecutive term according to the country's constitution. However, in September 2021, El Salvador's Supreme Court ruled that presidents can run for consecutive elections.
One of Bukele's competitors, FMNLB, filed a lawsuit claiming that his Bitcoin adoption program is unconstitutional. However, with the legalization of Bitcoin as legal tender in El Salvador, the complaint made little progress.
A Vision for Economic Growth
Bukele's government has implemented various tech-friendly policies aimed at enhancing the country's economy. This includes the elimination of all taxes on technological innovations. Gabor Gurbacs, a VanEck strategy advisor, believes that El Salvador has the potential to become the "Singapore of the Americas."
Tackling Crime and Human Rights Concerns
Bukele gained popularity for his strong stance against MS-13, a multinational gang that contributed to El Salvador having the highest homicide rates in the world six years ago. As a result of his crackdown, the country's homicide rate has fallen by an impressive 92.6%. El Salvador now boasts one of the lowest crime rates in Latin America.
However, critics, including the United Nations, argue that El Salvador has breached human rights laws by imprisoning 65,000 individuals without providing them with legal rights to defend themselves.
Looking Ahead to the Presidential Election
The presidential election in El Salvador is scheduled to take place on February 4, 2024. As Bukele seeks re-election, his popularity and innovative policies will continue to shape the future of the country.
