Release and disappointment

Roman Storm, the co-founder of cryptocurrency mixing service Tornado Cash, has been released on bail after being arrested by the United States' Department of Justice (DOJ). His lawyer, Brian Klein, expressed disappointment at the charges, stating that the prosecution's legal theory could have dangerous implications for all software developers.

Charges and allegations

The charges against Storm and his fellow co-founder Roman Semenov include operating Tornado Cash services and allegedly laundering over $1 billion in criminal proceeds. The developers are also accused of conspiracy to commit sanctions violations and conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business.

Previous developments

The arrest of Storm and Semenov comes a year after the US Treasury Department added Tornado Cash-related addresses to the list of Specially Designated Nationals of the Office of Foreign Asset Control. Another Tornado Cash developer, Alexey Pertsev, was arrested in the Netherlands and released from jail in April 2023 after spending nine months in prison. Semenov, however, remains at large.
