Ethereum Scaling Solution Goes Live
ConsenSys has announced the completion of the launch of its Ethereum scaling rollup, Linea. With over 150 partners onboarded, Linea has already bridged more than $26 million in Ether (ETH) to date. The rollout began in July 2023, with select partners joining the alpha mainnet. Linea provides developers with the ability to migrate existing decentralized applications (DApps) from Ethereum’s mainnet or other scaling solutions. Its zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) offers lower transaction costs and higher throughput for DApps within the Ethereum ecosystem.
Interview with Linea Senior Product Manager
Cointelegraph spoke exclusively to Linea's senior product manager, Declan Fox, about the major milestones achieved since the launch of zkEVM. Fox emphasized Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin's belief in the importance of zero-knowledge rollups (ZK-rollups), especially as zero-knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge (zk-SNARK) technology improves. Fox added that Linea's bytecode-compatible zkEVMs, like Linea, provide stronger security guarantees compared to other scaling solutions, while maintaining the benefits of the EVM.
Trustless Bridging and Advantages over Optimistic Solutions
According to Fox, Linea's mainnet enables trustless bridging between Ethereum and layer 2 in just minutes, creating a capital-efficient environment for liquidity to be connected to rollups. In contrast to optimistic rollup solutions, Linea addresses the disadvantage of a seven-day withdrawal confirmation time. Fox predicts that zkEVM solutions, like Linea, will outperform optimistic solutions in terms of user and liquidity acquisition. He also highlights Linea's support for a variety of Web3 use cases, particularly decentralized finance (DeFi) applications that benefit from its low transaction costs and high throughput.
Integration with MetaMask Wallet
Linea offers default integration with ConsenSys' browser-based MetaMask wallet, enabling DApps on the network to access millions of users across the ecosystem. Fox sees the potential for the Linea ecosystem as "boundless," leveraging ZK-rollup technology to provide lower costs, higher throughput, Ethereum-based security, and a capital-efficient bridge to the layer-1 mainnet.
ERC-20 Token Bridge Goes Live
As part of its public release, Linea also launched its ERC-20 token bridge, allowing ERC-20 tokens, including stablecoins, liquid staking ETH, and memecoins, to be bridged and accessible through the scaling solution.
