Decentralized media authentication app Click, developed by Nodle, has been released, offering a potential solution to combatting fake news and artificially generated media.

Nodle, a decentralized infrastructure network provider, has launched Click, its blockchain-based media authentication application. The app, which supports the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and is a member of the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), aims to combat the spread of fake news and ensure the integrity of media content.

Click primarily serves various users, including photographers, citizen journalists, reporters, law enforcement, sports fans, paparazzi, and content creators. However, Nodle CEO Micha Anthenor Benoliel highlights that news and journalism are the top use cases for the application.

How Click Works: Authenticating Media Content

Click requires users to capture images or videos using the app's camera. The content is then signed and logged on Nodle's blockchain, ensuring its integrity and authenticity. Authenticated content is made available on the device's local gallery and a public page on Click, which provides attribution to the contributor.

To prevent the dissemination of fake or generated media, Click requires users to capture content without any editing or generative artificial intelligence (AI) alterations. This ensures that only genuine and unaltered media is shared on the platform.

Partnering with Stock Image Platforms

Click aims to partner with stock image platforms such as Getty and AFP, acting as a "source of truth" for field-captured content. Users approaching these platforms will be able to verify which images and videos have been authenticated through Click, enhancing trust and transparency in the media industry.

Ensuring Intellectual Property Rights and Accreditation

Click plans to incorporate advanced attribution features and geofencing events to address intellectual property rights and accreditation issues. This will enable only authorized individuals to capture images at official events, such as the World Economic Forum or the FIFA World Cup.

Scalability and Future Plans

Nodle's infrastructure has the capability to store large amounts of content. Currently, Click stores content off-chain while saving a record of it on the Nodle blockchain. This allows the app to handle over 20 million records a day, with the ability to accommodate higher volumes as it scales.

Benoliel confirms that Click will always offer a free version of its product. However, the upload volume available to users may change in the future with the introduction of a premium offering.

Blockchain in Journalism

The broader journalism industry has yet to fully embrace the potential benefits of blockchain technology. However, initiatives like Click and previous partnerships, such as the Associated Press' collaboration with blockchain startup Civil, demonstrate the industry's growing interest in leveraging blockchain for immutable and transparent information storage and dissemination.
