₿trust, a non-profit organization funded by Twitter co-founder and Bitcoin advocate Jack Dorsey, is expanding its efforts in Africa with a recent acquisition.

The organization has acquired Qala, an African organization focused on training engineers in Bitcoin and Lightning. This acquisition will aid ₿Trust in its mission to promote the development and education of Bitcoin open-source engineers from the Global South.

Qala rebrands as ₿trust Builders Programme

The acquisition, finalized on September 1, involves Qala rebranding as the ₿trust Builders Programme. Qala, founded in 2021, has been dedicated to sourcing, training, and connecting African software developers with global Bitcoin companies to equip them with the necessary skills in the global Bitcoin ecosystem.

Qala has created one of the largest online communities of Bitcoin developers in Africa, spanning over 42 countries including Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda. Graduates of their programs have secured positions at companies like Galoy, SphinxChat, and Bitnob, as well as receiving open-source grants from ₿trust and Superlunar.

Key personnel join ₿trust

As part of the acquisition, Qala CEO Femi Longe and programme manager Stephanie Titcombe will officially join ₿trust as programme leads at ₿trust Builders.

₿trust board member Ojoma Ochai commented, "We're thrilled to welcome Femi and his exceptional team to ₿trust." Ochai also praised Qala for their progress in advancing open-source development in the Global South.

₿trust's mission to fund Bitcoin development worldwide

In February 2021, Jack Dorsey announced the establishment of ₿trust, a Bitcoin development trust aimed at global funding for Bitcoin development. With an initial value of 500 BTC or $23.7 million, the non-profit initially focused on supporting teams in Africa and India. In addition to Dorsey, the trust received funding from artist and producer Jay-Z. The non-profit is currently headed by a board of directors consisting of Abubakar Nur Khalil, Carla Kirk-Cohen, Obi Nwosu, and Ochai.
