A new tool released by Offchain Labs called Arbitrum Stylus could revolutionize Ethereum Virtual Machines (EVM) by attracting more developers and enhancing its code, according to co-founder Ed Felten. Speaking at Korea Blockchain Week, Felten explained that Stylus, which was launched on a testnet on Aug. 31, enables developers to use popular languages like Rust, C, and C++ to build Arbitrum apps. The advantage of this tool is that it allows non-Web3 native developers to utilize familiar languages and development tools, resulting in faster computations and smoother development processes.
Support for Legacy Languages
Felten emphasized the importance of supporting legacy languages like Rust, which have been extensively tested and audited, in order to leverage existing code. Rust, in particular, is designed to help catch development errors and reduce the likelihood of introducing bugs. By allowing developers to directly use these mature programming languages on-chain, they can build upon existing work and create more robust applications with less effort.
Lower Gas Fees and Expanded Possibilities
An interesting benefit of using Stylus is the significantly lower gas cost, which is 10 to 15 times lower than traditional gas fees. This reduction opens up new possibilities, such as integrating a crypto wallet on an iPhone and using Apple's FaceID for verifying wallet transactions, similar to bank card purchases. Additionally, the lower gas fees enable more complex tasks to be performed in a single transaction, making blockchain-based games more realistic and allowing for on-chain evaluation of machine learning models against live application data.
Streamlined Development and Enhanced Performance
Felten believes that Stylus can help accelerate project development by providing a smoother programming experience and better protection against bugs and errors. With the ability to utilize mature programming languages, developers no longer need to spend excessive time optimizing code for performance. This not only reduces friction in developing protocols but also allows for faster shipping of projects.
With Arbitrum Stylus, Offchain Labs aims to improve the Ethereum Virtual Machines (EVM) ecosystem by attracting more developers and empowering them with familiar programming languages and tools. The tool's ability to enhance code, reduce gas fees, and streamline development processes has the potential to drive innovation and adoption within the Ethereum community.
