Leading Tech Companies Support Biden's Voluntary AI Commitments

In a major move to prevent the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI), Adobe, IBM, Nvidia, and five other companies have endorsed US President Joe Biden's voluntary AI commitments. The announcement, made by the White House on Tuesday, Sept 12, underscores the urgent need to leverage the advantages of AI while mitigating its risks.

Commitments Gain Traction with Support from Palantir, Stability, Salesforce, Scale AI, and Cohere

Joining the initial commitments unveiled in July, Palantir, Stability, Salesforce, Scale AI, and Cohere have also endorsed the Biden administration's efforts to safeguard against the harmful misuse of AI technology. With collaboration between the private sector and the government, every available resource is being utilized to achieve this critical goal.

Temporary Measures in the Absence of Concrete Legislation

Recognizing the need for stronger AI regulation, the Biden administration's endorsed commitments are seen as a temporary measure. While discussions within Congress on potential AI legislation have been ongoing, there has been little progress in terms of introduced bills or substantial legal changes. Simultaneously, the White House is actively developing an executive order specifically related to AI.

Global Collaboration to Formulate AI Framework

To address the challenges posed by the rapidly expanding AI sector, a bipartisan group of US lawmakers introduced a bill in June 2023 proposing the establishment of an AI commission. As part of their commitment, the Biden administration aims to work alongside international allies like Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Nigeria, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom in shaping a global framework for AI.
