BUNGLING Public Health England paid £60,000 bonuses to its top execs before Covid.
They pocketed between £5,000 and £10,000 extra each in the months before No10 announced the quango would be scrapped.
And accounts show nine PHE chiefs were paid the same as, or more than, the Prime Minister.
PHE has been the driving force behind draconian lockdown restrictions, but came under fire for failures in preparing for a coronavirus pandemic and the testing shambles.
Matt Hancock announced in August he was scrapping PHE.
Danielle Boxall, from the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “Taxpayers don’t want to see their hard-earned cash rewarding failed quangocrats.”
PHE national director Paul Johnstone netted £265,000.
PM Boris Johnson earns £150,000 a year in comparison.
The PHE said: “We have saved more than £500million in costs over the last five years.”
