My mum-in-law got Covid on holiday – she has dementia & doctors won’t let us speak to her

A SCOT has told how a Christmas family trip to Lanzarote has turned into a holiday from hell.

Jamie Hutton’s dementia suffering mother-in-law contracted Covid and was rushed to hospital.

Her family haven’t been able to talk to her

But they haven’t been able to see Lana Robertson, 72, and have been given no update on when she might be discharged.

Jamie, 46, claims staff have laughed when they’ve asked to speak to his mother-in-law.

He said: “We came over for Christmas on December 22 for a week.

“She has Alzheimer’s and is quite disabled. On Christmas Day she took ill so on Boxing Day she went to hospital in an ambulance.

“She has gallstones and then tested positive for covid in hospital.

“We got a call on Boxing Day from a doctor saying she had Covid and would be in isolation.

“The next day we handed in a mobile phone and were able to speak for one day. She said to her daughter and my wife Yvette, ‘please promise me you’ll not leave me out here’.

“That was the last we heard from her and the phone has been switched off since.

“We phoned up and asked if they could put the mobile phone on and they laughed and hung up.

“Its very frustrating, the way we’ve been treated is absolutely horrendous.

“She will be so scared and confused. This was going to be her last holiday but we didn’t want it to be like this.”

Lana was taken to the island’s Hospital Doctor Jose Molina Orosa.

Not even HALF of Scotland’s Covid hospital admissions are in wards because of virus

Jamie and his wife Yvette, from Perth, have been left in the dark about what’s happening.

He said: “We’ve managed to speak to a doctor just twice since then. They said shes in an isolation corridor which I think is a ward. They said she’s got a stomach infection.

“On Saturday they said she’d be out in a couple of days but they are now saying it could be three weeks for. They say its for covid isolation which makes no sense.

“We got a Spanish guy to call the hospital and they told him we should stop calling. If they gave us a proper update we wouldn’t have to.

“They lost her list of medications we gave them and it took over a week for us to know this and we had to hand in another copy of her pills she takes.

“They said that would explain why she was disoriented cause they never knew she had Alzheimer’s but we said this on day one to a doctor.”

Spain has a covid isolation period of seven days.

Jamie added: “I thought there would be a translator at the hospital given Lanzarote is all about tourism.

“If she was just ill without Covid and we were seeing her everyday we’d accept it as that’s just life. But we’ve just been left in limbo.

“This could be very detrimental for her long-term health.”

Last night a hospital nurse said Lana was still Covid positive but was “fine and  stable”.

She added: “It is impossible that anyone can see Lana.  We understand the worrying situation for her family.”
