According to Michigan Live, the measure will now be sent to the Michigan legislature for consideration.

Whitmer came under fire for her coronavirus restrictions on businesses during the pandemic.

The move angered Republicans after she and the Department of Health and Human Services issued a three-week order limiting indoor social gatherings last week.

Whitmer called it a “targeted approach” informed by epidemiologists and public health experts.

She renewed her call for the Republican-led Legislature to codify a mask requirement in law in part to send a unified message to the public, calling it “the best weapon we have against our common enemy.” The proposed legislation is opposed by GOP legislative leaders.

She noted that lawmakers enacted laws keeping intact unemployment benefits and addressing other matters after the state Supreme Court’s October ruling striking down a law she repeatedly used to respond to the pandemic, but said her administration can continue largely combatting the pandemic unilaterally under a health law.

“This is precisely the power that one of the justices pointed to in terms of actions we can and should be taking throughout this pandemic,” the governor said.

Republican Representative Beau LaFave, Matt Maddock and Daire Rendon issued the impeachment resolution and claimed Whitmer was guilty of “corrupt conduct in office and crimes and misdemeanors” after the new restrictions were announced last week.

However, Michigan’s Republican Speaker of the House Lee Chatfield slammed the door two days before on calls by some in his party to impeach Whitmer.

Chatfield said any effort to impeach Whitmer “with the current set of facts” would be “on the same level” as the impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump last year, which he called “shameful”.

On Nov. 18, LaFave tweeted, “Today, I introduced Articles of Impeachment against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

“The four articles of impeachment against Gov. Whimer include failing to respect the separation of powers by exercising power granted to the legislation branch, violating the constitutional rights of the people of Michigan, Issuing executive orders against the interest of the people and state, and using state resources to reward political allies,” wrote LaFave.

Whitmer’s press secretary, Tiffany Brown, responded to the news and said, “Governor Whitmer doesn’t have any time for partisan politics or people who don’t wear mask, don’t believe in science, and don’t have a plan to fight this virus,” she told The Hill.

“Right now, she is focused on saving lives.”

Michigan has reported spikes in the daily coronavirus caseload over the last few weeks, with cases peaking at nearly six times the daily rate seen during the state’s previous spike in May, according to the Department of Health.

Over 347,000 cases of the virus have been confirmed and more than 9,000 Michiganders have died.
