Can I travel from England to Wales?

ENGLAND came out of its lockdown earlier this week, with the majority of the UK placed into either tier 2 or tier 3.

With Wales also out of its lockdown, here is what you need to know about travelling to the country from England.

What are the current travel rules in England?

England went into lockdown on November 5, meaning all non-essential travel was banned, and was lifted on December 2.

England has now been placed into tiers, with tier 1 regions – Cornwall, the Isle of Wight and the Isles of Scilly – able to travel and meet up with other households up to six people.

Tier 2 regions can also travel, but only within their own households, while tier 3 are still warned against any non-essential travel.

Travelling between tier 1 and tier 2 is allowed, although you must follow the guidelines of your own tier, not the tier you are travelling to.

What are the current travel rules in Wales?

The 17-day firebreak lockdown, which ended last month, was a shorter, full shutdown, compared to in England.

Groups of four people from different households can now meet indoors or outdoors in public places while abiding by social distancing rules.

Holidays can go ahead again, but only domestically – international holidays are still advised against

From today, pubs, restaurants and cafes have been banned from serving alcohol and must shut from 6pm.

Indoor entertainment and visitor attractions, including cinemas, museums and galleries will also have to shut.

Can I travel from England to Wales?

The Welsh government has lifted some of their restrictions which stopped all travel from England.

From today at 6pm, anyone from tier 1 or tier 2 is no longer banned from visiting Wales – tier 3 residents are still prohibited from visiting.

Tier 1 and tier 2 residents in Scotland can also visit, but not tier 3 and tier 4 regions.

The government still advise against holidays, to prevent spreading the virus, but will not enforce a border ban.

First Minister Mark Drakeford said: “There will be no restrictions on travel within Wales but we need to have some restrictions on travel across the border to those parts of the UK where infection rates are high to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

“We are also advising people in Wales not to travel into those parts of England and Scotland where the infection rate is lower, to help prevent them taking coronavirus with them.”
