THE BRAZILIAN “super-Covid” variant has spread to the United States as the first case of the strain was detected in Minnesota.
The highly-contagious variant, dubbed P1, is believed to be up to 50 percent more infectious than the standard coronavirus.
It also is considered to be rather resilient to the coronavirus vaccine.
Officials in Minnesota said the patient had recently traveled to Brazil, making them potentially the first person in the United States to contract the super-strain and bring it back home.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned against such a possible spread of the super-Covid strain.
“The emergence of this variant raises concerns of a potential increase in transmissibility or propensity for SARS-CoV-2 re-infection of individuals,” the CDC’s website reads.
The strain is the most common variant of the coronavirus found in areas around Manaus, the largest city in Brazil’s Amazon region.
Although there is little evidence to suggest it is anymore dangerous than the current Covid strain, there are issues that it would bypass the coronavirus vaccine.
The Brazil strain is also different than the other super strain found in the United Kingdom, which has already been detected in 20 U.S. states.
The CDC warned that the United States could see a “rapid growth” of the UK strain, dubbed B.1.1.7, in early 2021, with a UK report saying there was “a realistic possibility” that the strain could be deadlier than other variants.
Additionally, there has been a tertiary variant of the coronavirus in South Africa, with scientists all but surely theorizing the current vaccines would be rendered futile in stopping it.
Moderna however states that two doses of its vaccine are “expected to be protective against emerging strains detected to date.”
The strain, found in over 20 other countries, has not yet arrived in the United States.
