Your favorite cleaning products 'could release cancer-causing fumes' – here's what to avoid

The dangers of household cleaning products

If you think keeping your home clean and fresh is harmless, think again. A new study has found that popular household cleaning products can release hundreds of hazardous chemicals when used, including fumes that are known to be linked to cancer. These dangerous fumes, called volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are released by disinfectants, stain removers, and air fresheners.

Risks to your health

Exposure to these VOCs can lead to a range of health problems, including eye, nose, and throat irritation, respiratory problems, nausea, damage to the nervous system and other organs, and even cancer, according to the American Lung Association. These chemicals are not only harmful when inhaled, but can also cause skin reactions and suspected genetic defects.

Cleaning products and their harmful contents

Researchers tested 30 different cleaning products, including those marketed as eco-friendly and fragrance-free. The study found that 530 VOCs were present in these products, and 193 of them are considered potentially dangerous to human health. Some of the harmful ingredients included 2-butoxyethanol, isopropanol, toluene, and chloroform, which have been linked to skin reactions, drowsiness, organ damage, and cancer.

Choosing safer alternatives

According to the study published in the journal Chemosphere, products labeled as "green" emitted around half the VOCs compared to conventional products. Additionally, green products labeled as "fragrance-free" produced the fewest VOC emissions – nearly eight times less than conventional products and four times fewer than green products with fragrance. This suggests that selecting green and fragrance-free cleaning products can greatly reduce exposure to hazardous VOCs and improve indoor air quality.

Protecting your health and the environment

It's not just our health at stake. VOCs emitted by cleaning products also contribute to outdoor air pollution. A study from 2018 estimated that half of the VOCs responsible for air pollution come from consumer products. By choosing green cleaning products, we can not only protect our health but also reduce our impact on the environment.

A concern for women and children's health

The study also highlights the risks faced by those working in the cleaning industry, with a higher risk of developing asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. Additionally, studies have shown that higher use of certain indoor cleaners during pregnancy and infancy is associated with a greater risk of asthma and wheezing in childhood. Therefore, it is especially important for women's and children's health to opt for safer cleaning alternatives.

A wake-up call for consumers and regulators

This study serves as a wake-up call for consumers, researchers, and regulators to be more aware of the potential risks associated with the chemicals in our cleaning products. It's time to prioritize our health and make informed choices about the products we use in our homes.

So, the next time you're shopping for cleaning products, remember to read the labels carefully and opt for products that are green and fragrance-free. By doing so, you can take a proactive step towards protecting your health and creating a safer environment for yourself and your family.
