The Silent Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer Every Woman Should Know

Unveiling the Unknown

Many cancers, including ovarian cancer, have long been known as 'silent' diseases due to their vague symptoms that are often easy to miss or mistaken for something else. Shockingly, new research reveals that over a third of British women are not familiar with any symptoms of ovarian cancer.

The Deadly Reality

Ovarian cancer is one of the deadliest cancers for women, with low survival rates globally. In the UK alone, there are about 7,400 new cases and 4,000 deaths each year. Unfortunately, almost six in 10 cases are diagnosed at a late stage, partly due to the elusive symptoms of the disease.

Under-the-Radar Signs

As March marks ovarian cancer awareness month, Dr. Susanna Unsworth, a top gynaecologist, reveals 10 'under-the-radar' signs of the disease to watch out for:

  1. Urinary symptoms: increased frequency or urgency to pass urine
  2. Bowel changes: constipation or looser stool
  3. Change in appetite or feeling full quickly
  4. Indigestion symptoms: acid reflux or excess gas
  5. Low back pain
  6. Unexplained weight loss
  7. Excessive fatigue
  8. Pain during sex
  9. Change in vaginal bleeding pattern
  10. Nausea and vomiting

Knowing the Risk Factors

Aside from ageing, factors such as carrying faulty genes (e.g. BRCA genes), history of endometriosis, and certain lifestyle choices can increase the risk of developing ovarian cancer. Women post-menopause are more susceptible, with more than half of UK cases diagnosed in women over 65.

Dr. Susanna emphasizes the importance of recognizing these symptoms and seeking medical attention promptly if any persist for two to three weeks. Early detection can significantly impact treatment outcomes and overall survival rates.
