NHS rolls out free lung cancer checks to thousands at higher risk

THOUSANDS of people at higher risk of lung cancer are being called forward for free NHS lung checks as the service is rolled out to new areas in Peterborough and Huntingdon.

Early detection is key

Eligible patients at higher risk of lung cancer will receive a letter inviting them to book an appointment for a lung cancer screening, aimed at improving early diagnosis and survival rates.

Who is eligible?

People aged between 55 and 74 who are current or former smokers and live in areas where the programme is running will be invited for a screening.

Programme impact

The programme, running since 2019, uses a mix of hospital services and mobile scanning units to provide in-depth lung health checks. Data shows that early detection leads to higher survival rates.

Community-focused approach

The programme is a new model of care with a focus on community settings like supermarket carparks and sports stadiums to make it easier for people to access screenings.

Positive outcomes

Over 5,976 people have been diagnosed with lung cancer through the programme, with 76% diagnosed at a treatable stage. The NHS aims to make this service available nationwide by 2030.
