Former Sun Worshipper's Shock Diagnosis
A mum has shared her story after discovering that what she thought was just a harmless mark turned out to be cancer. Claire Brooks, 38, used to indulge in sunbeds and tanning injections to achieve a deep tan, only to be faced with a melanoma diagnosis.
Dangerous Quest for the Perfect Tan
Claire, a self-confessed 'sun worshipper,' used to frequent sunbeds up to four times a week and even resorted to applying hair gel to achieve a bronzed look. Despite dismissing concerns about a suspicious mole on her shin, she eventually had it removed, leading to a Stage 2b melanoma diagnosis.
A Harrowing Journey
After undergoing surgery to remove the growth and six lymph nodes, Claire was initially told she was cancer-free. However, two years later, the cancer returned, requiring further surgeries and ongoing immunotherapy to prevent its recurrence.
A Message of Caution
Claire now advocates for regular mole checks and warns against the dangers of sunbed use. Reflecting on her experience, she emphasizes that the pursuit of a tan is not worth risking one's health, urging others to prioritize their well-being over cosmetic ideals.
