Mum Hears Symptoms of Hidden Cancer

Unusual Discovery

A mum who couldn’t sleep due to a peculiar noise in her ear discovered she was actually hearing symptoms of her hidden cancer. Denise Wingfield, 55, mistook the whirring sound in her right ear for tinnitus but was later diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Diagnosis and Treatment

After being referred to a specialist, Denise underwent a nine-hour craniotomy while awake and was diagnosed with a grade 2 oligodendroglioma, a rare brain tumour. She then underwent further surgeries, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Despite the tumour growing, Denise remains positive and continues to be monitored closely by medical professionals.

Raising Awareness

Denise, a former kitchen assistant, is now passionate about raising money for Brain Tumour Research. She recently hosted a coffee morning fundraiser and will be taking on a '200k in May' challenge to support the cause. Despite her health challenges, Denise is determined to live life to the fullest and has even taken part in adrenaline-fueled activities.

Brain Tumour Research

According to Louise Aubrey, a community development manager at Brain Tumour Research, Denise's story is sadly not unique. Each year, 16,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with a brain tumour, yet only 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to brain tumours. Donations to Brain Tumour Research can be made through Denise’s fundraising challenge.
