Mobile phones do not raise the risk of brain tumours, study finds

MOBILE phones do not raise the risk of brain tumours, according to a study.

Radio waves that come out of phones have spooked people for years, with cancer fears reignited by the new super-fast high frequency 5G.

But Oxford University experts said they found no evidence that phones raise the risk.

Their study showed brain tumour rates are the same in women who use a phone every day as in women who have never made a call.

Study author Kirstin Pirie said: “These results support the growing evidence that mobile phone use under usual conditions does not increase brain tumour risk.”

Data from 776,000 women over 50 in the UK showed there was no link between mobile phone use and the chance of getting cancer.

Women were quizzed about their phones in 2001 and again in 2011.

By 2011, 75 per cent of people in their 60s and half of those in their late 70s were using phones.

A total of 3,268 women in the study, revealed in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, developed brain tumours, which cause an average of 5,000 deaths per year in the UK.

They were equally split between phone users and non-users.

There was also no difference in the side of the head where tumours developed, even though most people use their phone on the right.

Scientists said there is not enough data on “heavy users” who chat for hours every week, but added technology is getting safer every year.

Dr Joachim Schüz, from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, said: “Mobile technologies are improving all the time, so that the more recent generations emit substantially lower output power.”

Prof Malcolm Sperrin, of Oxford University Hospitals, added: “There is always a need for further research but this study should allay many concerns.”
