Demi Jones's Return to Love Island
After a terrifying health battle, Demi Jones is once again gracing our screens as she enters the All Stars villa on Love Island. The 25-year-old influencer wowed viewers as she walked in wearing a bright blue bikini, but some might have noticed a faint scar at the base of her neck.
Demi's Battle with Thyroid Cancer
Demi has been open about her battle with thyroid cancer, which left her with a scar at the base of her neck. She was diagnosed with the rare form of cancer after appearing on Love Island in 2020.
The First Symptom and Diagnosis
In a video shared on her Instagram in collaboration with Cancer Research UK, Demi revealed that the first symptom she experienced was a lump in her neck. At the time, she dismissed it as she was busy with her final year exams at university. However, her mum insisted she get it checked out, leading to her diagnosis in May 2021.
Rare Thyroid Cancer
The golf-ball sized lump that Demi had was a rare form of thyroid cancer, affecting the small butterfly-shaped gland between the collarbones. According to Cancer Research UK, around 3,900 people are diagnosed with this type of cancer in the UK each year, and it's more common in women than men.
Recognizing the Symptoms
Alongside a lump in the neck, other initial symptoms of thyroid cancer can include a hoarse voice that lasts for more than three weeks, and a sore throat and difficulty swallowing that doesn't improve. It's important to get these symptoms checked by a doctor, as early detection makes treatment easier.
Demi's Journey to Recovery
Demi underwent surgeries to remove the cancerous lump and her entire thyroid. She celebrated being cancer-free in December 2021 and proudly shows her small scar at the base of her neck. Since recovering, Demi has dedicated herself to raising awareness about thyroid cancer and has inspired many to get their lumps checked.
A Voice for Cancer Awareness
Demi's journey has not only impacted those who have faced similar health battles but has also raised awareness about thyroid cancer. Her story prompted others, including Hollyoaks actress Abi Phillips, to get their lumps checked. Demi even nominated her surgeon for an award, expressing her gratitude for saving her life.
Grateful for the Love Island Experience
As Demi returns to the Love Island villa, she is grateful for the opportunity to be an advocate for cancer awareness. She hopes to use her platform to inspire others and shed light on the importance of early detection and treatment.
Today, Demi shines as a symbol of strength and resilience, proving that even in the face of adversity, love and determination can prevail.
