Forever Chemicals in Fruit and Veg

Analysis of Government figures has revealed that toxic chemicals known as PFAS have been found in 50% of fruit and vegetables from UK supermarkets. These 'forever chemicals' are concerning as they may never leave the body once consumed.

Health Risks and Contaminated Produce

PFAS are linked to serious health issues such as liver damage, high cholesterol, thyroid disease, obesity, fertility problems, and cancer. Strawberries were found to have the highest levels of PFAS, with other fruits and vegetables also contaminated.

Pesticides and Consumer Concerns

The chemicals are also present in non-stick frying pans, clothing, cosmetics, food packaging, and pesticides, which are believed to be the main source of contamination in produce. While legal limits for pesticides are rarely exceeded, concerns have been raised about the health risks associated with PFAS exposure.

Call for Government Action

The Pesticide Action Network UK (Pan UK) is calling for a ban on the 25 PFAS pesticides currently in use in Britain, citing their unnecessary nature for food production and the potential harm they pose to consumers and the environment. Campaigners urge the government to prioritize safer and more sustainable alternatives for farmers.

Protecting Consumers and the Environment

Experts warn that PFAS are man-made chemicals that have contaminated the environment globally and pose a significant risk to human health. Calls for a complete ban on these chemicals highlight the need to prevent further exposure and protect future generations.

The Environment Department and HSE have been approached for comment on these concerning findings.
