Missed signs of a deadly disease
A seemingly healthy actor, Nick Baldev, tragically passed away just four days after being diagnosed with bowel cancer. Nick had been experiencing symptoms for several months before his diagnosis, but he did not recognize them as potential signs of the disease.
A silent killer
Nick Baldev was only 40 years old when he received his diagnosis in June 2023. Doctors suspect that his condition had gone undetected for five years, highlighting the stealth-like nature of bowel cancer.
Honoring his memory
Nick’s family is now using his story to raise awareness about the early warning signs of bowel cancer. The disease claims the lives of almost 17,000 people in the UK every year. His sister, Sheena, said that they want to make sure Nick’s death was not in vain and that others are aware of the symptoms.
A brave battle with a chronic illness
Nick had lived with ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease, for most of his adult life. Despite managing his symptoms effectively and achieving remission in 2011, he experienced a flare-up in early 2023. Unfortunately, he assumed that the symptoms were related to his existing condition and did not seek timely medical attention.
No improvement from treatment
When Nick’s symptoms did not improve with prescribed steroids, he insisted on a private referral in March. On June 19, he underwent a colonoscopy that revealed a large tumor in his bowel. Further tests confirmed the presence of bowel cancer, but the disease’s extent would require results from a biopsy.
A devastating turn of events
Three days after diagnosis, Nick’s health rapidly deteriorated, and emergency surgery was deemed necessary. During the procedure, cameras discovered a 4-inch tumor in his bowel, which had already spread. Doctors informed him that he had just a day or two to live.
A heartbreaking farewell
Nick’s father Rajan described the news as "beyond devastating and incomprehensible," and it felt as though their world had collapsed. In his final hours, Nick found the strength to sing his favorite song and was surrounded by family and close friends. He passed away on June 25, and his funeral took place on July 10.
Remembering a special soul
Nick, affectionately known as ‘Big Nick,’ was known for his love of people and a zest for life. His family and friends described him as funny, witty, artistic, and outgoing. He was deeply cherished by those who knew him, and his loss left a profound impact on the community.
Raising awareness and funds
The family is now raising funds for the charity Occtopus Oxford Colon Cancer Trust and urging people, particularly those with bowel conditions like colitis, to get tested if they notice any potential symptoms of bowel cancer. They emphasize the importance of extensive testing, as symptoms can often be identical to other conditions.
